Badminton players from Rhineland-Palatinate have returned from two major national competitions with an impressive collection of medals, underlining the strength of the sport across both school and club levels. From the national schools final in Berlin to the DJK Federal Sports Festival in Essen, young athletes and experienced competitors alike produced performances that put their region firmly in the spotlight.
One of the standout stories came from the mixed U14 and U16 badminton teams of Heinrich Heine Gymnasium (HHG) in Kaiserslautern. Competing in the national final of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics & Paralympics” programme in Berlin, the school’s U14 mixed team secured second place, while the U16 mixed squad finished third.
The achievements attracted praise from across the region. Hartmut Rohden, Deputy Chairman of the Board at Sparkasse Kaiserslautern, described the results as an outstanding accomplishment that had helped raise the profile of the area on a national stage. For many years, the Sparkassen Finance Group, the German School Sports Foundation and the German Olympic Sports Confederation have supported sporting development at the elite sports school.
The teams travelled to Berlin wearing black-and-white sports jackets provided to ensure a unified appearance for schools representing Rhineland-Palatinate at the finals. Alongside the competition branding, the jackets featured the state coat of arms and quickly became a popular symbol of team spirit and regional identity. Andrea Brunnett, Head of Marketing at Sparkasse Kaiserslautern, noted that the clothing served as a visible sign of belonging while reflecting the strong support available to talented young athletes in the region. The official team kit was funded through a joint initiative involving the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Education, the state accident insurance fund and the regional Sparkassen association.
For the students, however, the experience extended far beyond the courts. School principal Eva Wenzel-Staudt, Deputy Principal Lars Emmermann and Head of the Sports Department Jan Christmann all pointed to the significance of the event, not only because of the sporting success but also because it brought national recognition to the school. HHG has built a reputation for developing exceptional sporting talent across a wide range of disciplines, including cycling, football, tennis, judo and badminton.
According to teacher-coach Julian Degiuli and regional performance coach Naghmeh Mehrjoo, the trip to Berlin proved unforgettable. The athletes competed at top-level venues while also exploring the German capital, turning the tournament into a memorable educational and sporting experience. Across all disciplines represented at the Spring Final 2026, Rhineland-Palatinate collected four medals, with badminton athletes from Heinrich Heine Gymnasium responsible for half of them.
The scale of the competition highlights the significance of those results. Each year, around 800,000 pupils from across Germany take part in the “Youth Trains for the Olympics & Paralympics” programme, including up to 30,000 students from Rhineland-Palatinate alone.
Meanwhile, another successful chapter for the region’s badminton community unfolded in Essen during the DJK Federal Sports Festival. The event hosts the annual DJK National Badminton Championships, which every four years become part of the wider sports festival programme. Following the 2022 edition in Schwabach, this year’s tournament attracted 276 competitors across 39 events, ranging from the U11 age group to the O55 category.
DJK Plaidt travelled to Essen with a squad of twelve players and returned home with nine podium finishes after several demanding days of competition.
The club’s medal-winning performances were:
- Girls’ Singles U17 – 2nd place: Jolina Saftig
- Girls’ Singles U19 – 3rd place: Christina Dahl
- Girls’ Doubles U19 – 1st place: Christina Dahl and Jolina Saftig
- Mixed Doubles U19 – 2nd place: Christina Dahl and Finn Lohoff (Everswinkel)
- Women’s Singles C – 3rd place: Victoria Miltz

- Women’s Doubles C – 3rd place: Katharina Hein and Victoria Miltz
- Men’s Singles O35 – 3rd place: Christoph Andries
- Men’s Singles O55 – 3rd place: Dirk Becker
The results capped off a highly successful weekend for the club and added further momentum to an already significant period in its history. The last time Plaidt hosted the national championships was in 2012. With DJK Plaidt set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, the badminton section submitted a bid to stage next year’s championships and was awarded hosting rights.
Taken together, the performances in Berlin and Essen paint a picture of a badminton community thriving at every level. School teams are competing for national honours, clubs continue to develop players capable of reaching the podium, and the region itself is becoming increasingly visible on the national badminton map.
